Mentorship Update Spring 2019
Mentorship: growth and learning for ALL involved.
Each year, SABM helps to connect members in mentoring relationships and each year, we receive feedback from program participants that reveal how beneficial the relationship is for both Mentee AND Mentor. That might sound surprising, but don’t take it from us!
The following was shared by SABM Mentor Rita King and her Mentee, Mary Ann Taylor:
“My mentee is fairly new in her role. She expressed that her predecessor left months before she started as PBM Coordinator. She felt she had much catching up to do and so much to learn without anyone to really train her. Her reporting structure is part of Lab administration but her role is independent with a lot of autonomy. That is quite similar to mine, so we have been able to share common practice and challenges. There are differences in working with a large system vs one hospital, however we both struggle to do it all. We need to prioritize and find champions to help drive initiatives forward.
It was great to meet at the SABM annual meeting in New York this past Sept. Mary Ann expressed that she learned a lot from the certification classes and the speakers. We have discussed how to use the SABM tools to help with our programs. We are both committed to the SABM standards which are being used/ followed. There’s so much to do and we discussed we can’t do it all. I was able to share processes and program structure and provide support in areas where we had already achieved success. It was also evident that she had made some great strides with treatment of anemia in hospitalized patients and iron therapy, an area that my program is working on.
One of Mary Ann’s challenges is finding time needed to work on the PBM program due to competing priorities. We discussed the importance of sharing meaningful data and the need to determine what metrics they want to use to demonstrate improvements achieved as a result the initiatives they are working on. I encouraged her to outline the accomplishments that have been made so far and set goals for the coming year with the help of the Blood Management Committee. To help her plan the upcoming meeting at her hospital, I shared minutes of some of our meetings. Our Mentor/mentee meetings are scheduled monthly and we connect with each other more often as needed.
It is evident that the mentor/mentee relationship is helpful and beneficial to both of us!”
When matching Mentors, such as Rita, with Mentees like Mary Ann, SABM does its best to consider likeness in program roles, hospital size/structure and more—the goal is to enable supportive relationships that are beneficial for all involved. For the Mentee, these relationships are a source of encouragement and guidance—a chance to focus on goals and priorities, and to learn about the resources on-hand within SABM. For the Mentor, these relationships are a strong leadership opportunity—a chance to grow professionally by re-focusing one’s own goals and priorities, all while supporting others.

Membership Update Spring 2019
In December 2018, the Membership Committee celebrated our membership status (530+), and launched a campaign to continue this positive momentum in our membership numbers. To do this, we developed a general recruitment flyer with highlights of SABM membership. We sent this flyer via email directly to those individuals who registered for and attended the annual meeting, but who are not active SABM members. We also distributed the flyer to people who have purchased PBM products from SABM.org or expressed interest in learning more about PBM through the website. We will be tracking the numbers of new members recruited through this initiative over the next 3 months.

Consider submitting your future manuscripts in PBM for peer review and publication in this new section. The success of this endeavor will depend on the provision of material to make it lively and attractive to our colleagues and other professionals in the field.
