SABM Spotlight

Picture of Barcelona trip

During November, 2018, SABM members Axel Hofmann and Sherri Ozawa traveled to Barcelona, Spain, to participate in a live Webcast on the subject of the opportunities and challenge in PBM Program implementation. The event was part of a larger PBM educational series which was supported by a generous grant from Vifor Pharmaceuticals. Other SABM leaders and members also participated in the series of Webcasts, including Aryeh Shander, and European SABM members and PBM luminaries Donat Spahn and Jens Meier. The goal of the entire series is to present the strong evidence for the positive impact that PBM has on patient outcomes; this has been accomplished by analyzing current data from around the world that demonstrates its efficacy. Both SABM and NATA (The Network for the Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives/Network for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management, Haemostasis and Thrombosis) have endorsed the Webinar series for its quality and accuracy.

Patient Blood Management Learning Collaborative October 29, 2018 Seattle Washington

Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge regarding best practices in patient blood management.
  • Identify practical steps toward instituting a pre-operative clinic for patient blood management.

On October 29, 2018 Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) organized a one-day seminar “Patient Blood Management Learning Collaborative”. These in-person collaborative learning events are held once or twice yearly and all WSHA hospital members are invited to attend without charge. The emphasis for this session were: research, procedures that were once thought to be ‘impossible’ without transfusion, and how to initiate and implement a preoperative assessment/anemia clinic.

Four of our own ‘SABM family’ were among the speakers at this seminar: Drs Patricia Ford, Bruce Spiess, as well as Sherri Ozawa RN, and Trudi Gallagher RN

 Presentations included:

  • Tools/documents that can be helpful during the implementation of preoperative preparation and infusion centers
  • Patient Blood Management planning and implementation in large hospital center
  • Bone Marrow transplants when blood is not an option
  • Anemia in the preoperative setting; why we still need to address
  • Leadership buy-in to PBM and preoperative assessment clinic
