The Pediatric Blood Management at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital (HDVCH) has been thriving in the past few years. Founded by Dr. Nabil Hassan over a decade ago, it has grown markedly and is seeing almost 300 visits per year in a variety of inpatient and outpatient areas. With Dr. Hassan’s departure, Dr. Brian Boville took over the program, and he began some new surgical and patient blood management initiatives. This includes our craniosynostosis program with Dr. John Girotto, where the HDVCH team has dropped our transfusion rate from 80% to under 20% in the last 24 months using a combined outpatient pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative protocol (data in process of publication – presented at SABM last year). Additionally, in cooperation with our pediatric gastroenterology team, we have a multidisciplinary short gut team that is helping make sure that regular iron supplementation to our parenteral nutrition dependent children is taken care of (avoiding un-necessary anemia). This same team is looking at how to prevent anemia in children with inflammatory bowel disease, and we look forward to opportunities and growth in this area in the future.

We continue to see patients from a variety of pediatric surgical disciplines such as orthopedic surgery, general surgery and otolaryngology, where we continue to provide pre-, intra-, and post-operative options for families to minimize their children’s risk for transfusion. Our nurse practitioner, David Sterken, recently won a Spectrum Health nursing award for his excellent patient care and advocacy. His rapid interventions and coordination with our infusion center means that nearly 100% of our patients reach their preoperative hemoglobin goals. Finally, we continue to provide individualized services to patients who wish to attempt bloodless congenital heart surgery. While this is not always possible, in certain conditions, we have have enjoyed success in over 60% of the attempted cases. Under Dr. Boville’s guidance, the Pediatric Blood Management team at HDVCH continues to research novel types of iron infusions and their safety, the use of blood products and optimal hemoglobin for extracorporeal therapies, and the use of thromboelastography in children.
