SABM Spotlight
The 5th Annual Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Society Conference
SABM member Nathaniel Usoro, MD, a general surgeon from Nigeria, recently organized and led the 5th Annual conference of the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Society (BMSS), held on October 31 – November 1, 2019 at the University of Calabar in Calabar, Nigeria. SABM President Sherri Ozawa, RN, and Aryeh Shander, MD, were privileged to be invited as the keynote speakers for the event. The positive effects on patient outcomes from the application of Patient Blood Management or Bloodless Medicine & Surgery techniques are now well documented in the medical literature worldwide. However, there is a pressing need for the development of Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Programs in that particular part of the globe, not only for its contributions to improving patient outcomes, but also because of the high rates of infectious agents in the donor blood supply. Those are some of the needs addressed by BMSS through promoting bloodless care. Four of the local presenters described the contribution that their SABM membership as well as attendance at SABM annual meetings has made on improving practice, even in a resource challenged environment.

SABM leaders Sherri Ozawa, RN, and Aryeh Shander, MD, were also invited to present.
