Welcome to the Winter Newsletter!

In 2017 SABM embraces the new year with the latest and greatest in Patient Blood Management evidence, research, CME, projects, mentorship and membership opportunities.

This edition provides updates on the on-going “age-of-blood” debate, along with a link to an outstanding review of anemia management in CHF patients, published in the American Journal of Hematology, its authors devoted members of SABM.  CME events abound including topics on our website along with sessions provided via the relationship with Quantia MD.  The new year brings opportunity for re-evaluation and re-commitment to our PBM programs.  The Standard of the Quarter section speaks to the necessary elements of program review and effectiveness.  The SABM Board enters 2017 with a refreshed strategic plan that will also align with this Standard and others.

The fall 2016 Annual Meeting saw a huge reinvigoration for membership and mentorship which pushes us into 2017 with updates on how to expand your personal or hospital’s role as a member or affiliate.  As always, the Newsletter staff enjoys featuring outstanding members and hospitals in the Spotlight.  This is a chance for our colleagues to shine, sharing PBM experiences with us all.

I am personally very excited to share that 2017 will bring another exciting advance for SABM.  We have partnered with the national Choosing Wisely® campaign and anticipate development of SABM’s guidance statements.  Look for notices for a survey of membership as we want your input in this important endeavor.

Don't forget to save the date for the 2017 Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, which will take place September 6 - 9, 2017. Planning is already underway.

In 2017, we say hello to our society’s new management company, The Adept Group, and thank them for their early support, including this Newsletter edition.

Finally, we sadly say good-bye in this Newsletter to an innovative surgeon and lifelong advocate of PBM, Dr. Denton Cooley. His “Forward” in Drs. Gombotz, Zacharowski & Spahn’s textbook (which I strongly recommend) emphasizes that PBM is relevant to all patients and medical fields.  His contributions cannot go understated.  This Newsletter strives to push that message continually forward.

Best in 2017,

Dr. Carolyn Burns
