Letter from the President
Dear SABM Members,
2020 is off to challenging start as we are dealing with the new COVID-19 world. We are seeing more being asked of us and our health care systems than we could have imagined. I do hope this newsletter finds you healthy and dealing with this new environment in a productive way.
SABM has sent out two great resources and I wanted to make sure you had access to them. Please watch your email for other resources that are being developed.

In addition, we are forming a COVID -19 task force comprised of a number of SABM members. While we all learn more about the PBM related aspects of this infectious disease, including its thrombotic manifestations and perceived or real impact on the blood supply – we want to provide our members with high quality, sound scientific and clinical information. More communication on the work of this group will be forthcoming.
Despite the challenge of the circumstances, a number of SABM projects have moved along to completion, including a manuscript on clinical guidelines for Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution, recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Cardiovascular Anesthesia. We have recently completed work on an advisory panel on iron deficiency anemia in cardiac surgery, and we will soon be updating our Iron Corner with new content reflecting developments in the world of anemia management.
Our Annual Meeting Planning Committee is hard at work on our September conference, which will again feature joint sessions with both NATA and the American Society for Anesthesiology. Our newly named “Scientific Committee” (formerly the Research Committee) will expand its role by supporting and vetting the scientific content of the meeting, to ensure that it is THE premier source for relevant PBM information to clinicians and others.
This edition of the newsletter will let you know more about our progress toward a global federation of PBM organizations, as well as the efforts of our energetic members around the world, proving again that the work of SABM is only possible because of its outstanding membership!
We are thrilled to have the support of a new management company, Talley Management Group, and a new Executive Director, Tim Bower. Tim brings decades of Non Profit Society management experience to SABM, and has been on a steep but successful learning curve since taking on the role in January of this year. I believe you will see significant positive movement in many areas, especially in critical structural and organizational aspects of our activity. He is supported by a seasoned diverse team of professionals who will oversee the many activities of SABM, including our Annual Meeting, which will take place later this year in Las Vegas, NV, USA.
As always, I thank each of you for your dedication to the mission of SABM, and encourage you as you strive for progress in PBM in your individual practice and institution!
Sincerely,
Sherri Ozawa, RN President
